Although Windmills is all about softball for girl’s age 8 – 18 yrs., a guiding principle of the organization is to encourage the players to give back to the community. Just such an activity took place on June 5th when the 14U Blue team conducted a softball clinic for McAuliffe Elementary School. McAuliffe is located in the Humboldt Park neighborhood and twenty-four 4th and 5th grade girls from the school eagerly participated in the 2-hour instructional clinic.
Windmills alumna and 14U coach Fran Reckers organized the clinic, which included instruction in the fundamentals of throwing, hitting, pitching, catching and fielding. 14U players provided the instruction at each of the stations. Parents and coaches helped out as well. McAuliffe school counselor Jamie Friedlander, herself a former travel softball player, arranged the event. A spirited scrimmage followed the instructions.
At the conclusion of the clinic, each girl received a new softball and Windmills t-shirt. Additionally, the Windmills families donated bats, gloves, helmets, cleats and equipment bags to the school. We are happy to say that everyone left with big smiles and a promise to continue our association during the Windmills fall ball season.
